Reporting back to base

Captain Log
Entry 15

The time has come for me to sent my final report back to HQ, what they like to call a creative rationale.

I was given the task to find an issue that campus students had about the campus itself or the way it works, anything they had a problem with. After initial research and talking with the veganites i found my issue, the student were bored at campus, that it lacked a certain stigma that makes Vega Vega. One of the main topics was that there is nowhere where students can relax after or during a heavy day at campus, the cafeteria is nice but it doesn't provide the steam release that most students are looking for .

I can up with the solution of letting the students themselves design and build a "chill room" entirely for them by them. This will give the students a sense of interest and excitement for coming to campus as it will make them comfortable and give them a space to let the mind run wild, which is what Vega is all about and students need that freedom to produce great assignments that reflect them as students.

Keeping the theme of my blog as an exploring captains is the same as following a story and keeps readers interested as to what will happen next, telling a story also lets you exaggerate and describe the things you want in a fun and interesting way.

Time is always an issue for any activity but as i go on my holiday break i will continue to jot down in my captains diary as it is a fun way to let people know your ideas and the ways you would like to solve it.

Captain out.

Food for thought

Captains Log
Entry 14

Spending the past couple weeks getting into the heads of these fascinating veganites has been a blast, i have received some great insights on what they would like to change on campus. It was unfortunate i could only help with one of their many issues but i'm sure they will enjoy the task set upon them to create their chill room.

The task will also be a fun time to be involved in as the whole campus will be buzzing and ideas will be coming in by the truckload, getting a campus "community" doing things for themselves to make campus a more relaxing and fun place to be is something that would also benefit the campus as the inhabitants will be a lot more interested and excited about their fields of study.

As we come to an end of term everyone can't wait to go on holiday and relax, but something tells me there will be a little itch that only campus can scratch, so its up to them to make that scratch one that hits the spot every time.

Plan of action

Captains Log
Entry 13

So it's time to set the plan rolling.
Project chill room will take place over a month or 2 where students can enter a design for a piece of furniture in the room. Each student that enters will have to design something that reflects their area of studies in a way that suites the specific creatives in their field. For example a snap shotter will have to design a image oriented design like photos or film style.

At the end of the submission period there will be a vote where the whole campus would get a pamphlet showcasing all the designs that were submitted and vote for their favourites. Two items will be chosen for each type of "furniture" like 2 couches, 2 tables, 2 sets of chairs and so on. There will also be a separate entry for those who would rather paint or put their art on the walls.

The veganites will build the room and it will become theirs.

Your own space

Captains Log
Entry 12

So I recently read an article about how working in a space created by you or people that you are cooperating with, boosts productivity by up to 80%. Crazy statistic but it has merit, just think about when you are working on something in your room which you have decorated and made your own how much easier it is to get things done and to get them done well.

Feeling relaxed and comfortable gives the mind a more tunnel vision style of processing information and coming up with solutions, filtering out any irrelevant noise, unnecessary thinking like "what if i fail" or "is it good enough" , a comfortable and clear mind produces without effort.

That being said its not always easy to steel your mind, especially in a busy campus environment but the chill room i'm proposing will get rid of the academic perspective of being on campus and steer the inhabitants to a more relaxed and fun environment where they can let their ideas run wild without being judged or assessed.

Keep calm and free the mind.

Plans into actions

Captains Log
Entry 11

So when I put the idea forward to some of the higher ups in Vega they said to me that it might be a little over budget, I then thought to myself that wait we are in a campus full of creatives and hands on designers so why don't we just build our own furniture for the chill room. The space is there as I have noticed plenty of unused space on campus grounds which could be used for the students, made by the students.

I did a little research and there are hundreds of different ways to build your own couches, tables, chairs and almost anything by recycling old things into fun new designs. The veganites themselves say they would love to make there own piece of furniture that represents their species for example a crazy coloured table made out of cans by the design thinkers or a collage of images made into a bookshelf by the snap shotters. The possibilities are endless and offers a fun way to make a student stigma on campus that would be passed down year after year.

Leaving a mark is sort of what veganites are taught so why not implement it on campus?

First Drafts

Captains Log
Entry 10

Ideas roll in about how the chill room should be, and trying to please everyone is not an easy task as each species has its interests and preferred space they like to relax and so i have to take bits and pieces of each preference a sow together a worthy room.

A solution and design i will have to pass by the veganite government or as they call it the SLB for the go ahead. As a first draft it seems to catch everyone's attention and they genuinely like it, they even have ideas for a name such as the nebula, the watering hole and the moorllihc (chillroom backwards). Crazy names for a crazy people.

Expertly doe first scamp:

The campus people like vibrant colours like the reds, purples and whites giving it a character of its own.

More drafts are pending, adding bits and pieces to finally get the perfect layout, work work and you shall produce.

Telling the story

Captains Log
Entry 9

Once upon a time there was a boy who was seeking the answer to life, he ventured through snowy mountains, dry deserts, ravenous jungles and mighty oceans but never found his answer. One clear and quiet night he stumbled upon an old man sitting on a cliff side staring into the moonlit ocean, curious as to what this old man was doing the boy went up to him and took a seat.... He asked the old man what he was doing here so late and in such an isolated location, the old man replied "I'm dreaming", puzzled the boy asked the old man what he meant... The old man smiled and asked the boy a simple question "don't you dream?", the boy said "of course i do but its all an illusion". The old man said to the boy " i'll let you in on a little secret, if you awaken from this illusion and you understand that black implies white, self implies other, life implies death or shall I say death implies life. You can feel yourself not as a stranger in the world not as something here on probation, not as something that has arrived here by fluke but you begin to feel your own existence as absolutely fundamental. I'm not trying to sell you on this idea in the sense of converting you to it, I want you to play with it, I want you to think of it's possibilities, I'm not trying to prove it, I'm just putting it forward as a possibility of life to think about. So then, let's suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream you wanted to dream and you could for example have the power within one night to dream 75 years of time or any length of time you wanted to have and you would naturally as you began on this adventure of dreams you would fulfil all your wishes, you would have every kind of pleasure and after several nights of 75 years of total pleasure each you would say "wow that was pretty great...but now lets have a surprise, let's have a dream that isn't under control that something is going to happen to me and i don't know what its going to be and you would come out of that and say "wow that was a close shave wasn't it?", then you would get more and more adventurous and you would make further and further out gambles as to what you would dream and finally you would dream.............where you are now, you would dream the dream of living the life that you are actually living today."

Got sucked in didn't you?
Remixing as its finest, daily dose of boredom extermination successful.
The chill room I'm designing should have a similar effect on these veganites.

Focus

Captains Log
Entry 8

As i myself draw nearer to the end of my reports back to base, I can now turn my attention to helping the veganites with their problem of boredom. Over the next couple days i will be getting involved with the blueprints of a "De-stress room" where all manner of vega creatives can enjoy. Keeping to the quirky nature of the campus the room will be vibrant, colourful, contain art from the inhabitants (which will recycle month to month) and most of all provide a space to let off that built up steam.

A few examples of the idea:

Exciting time to be involved in the shaping of a space for these weird and wonderful veganites that call campus home.

The More you know pt2.

Captains Log
Entry 7

So I found an old training video on how to make your recruits happy while they are at the work place, since they spend most of their time there it is like a second home for them, much like the inhabitants of Vega living their busy campus live's.

I decided to share this little bit of information with you to get those thinking gears turning, cause no one wants to work or study somewhere they don't want to be.

This video is also a great example of expressing your issues in a creative way.

Busy Boredom

Captains Log
Entry 6

As the days grow neared to the end of term all the Vega inhabitants are busy busy busy...yet I find a bored look on their faces, a look of 'there's a million things I'd rather be doing right now'. They seem to be steam engine rolling along not stopping to let out some steam and relieve some pressure in the valves.

Case in point:

Many bored face's there...

Looks like I've found my problem, these inhabitants need some stress relief and a place to chillaxe as they say, on campus grounds.

Seems like I'm going to be busy myself.

Beating the boredom

Captains Log
Entry 5

So the locals tell me that they have been getting a little bored during the free hours of busy campus life, there is only one pool table, the wifi is a little slow (which would irritate anyone) and the library is a tad bland according to the majority of the veganites.

Some would like a relax lounge while other some more tables on the grass but it all seems to revolve not being bored to death. One inhabitant suggested the campus make a play room with bright coloured chairs with blank canvas's scattered around the room, bean bag reading spots and in general just a place to blow off some steam.

Since they are working all day getting the brain to suck up as much info as they can they crave a space to just forget about the essays and assignments and let the brain run wild for a few moments. Can't say i wouldn't mind one of those.

This will be a project i will help see through.

Examination times

Captains Log
Entry 4

As we come closer to the trial times of the veganites, tensions are rising as the inhabitants prepare for the trials ahead. The design thinkers getting their posters on, the snap shotters trying to nail that perfect picture and the smell of holiday pushing them along.
Students are feeling the pressure as it has only now become a real thing and not a game, you can see everyone scurrying along to get assignments in on time, getting that last essay written in record time and an all out "oh god there is no time left".

As each inhabitant becomes their own keeper of time they will need to manage it well and make sure they use it just as well to get the best possible outcome. I'm looking forward to see how they each handle it.

This reminds me of our training where you had nothing but your hands to build something extraordinary...

The more you know

Captains Log
Entry 3

I stumbled upon something today that caught my interest, campus inhabitants are not as informed as they should be on the rules and the procedures that take place. For instance resubmissions, reweighs, what happens if you fail?. Those seem to be what are on everyone's mind just before mid terms.

People seem to not realise the consequences of either not doing your work or just being indifferent, the cause seems funny enough not to be the curriculum or the campus but the interest of the inhabitants. Some classes seem to just be totally irrelevant and in turn puts the person off, which also in turn makes them not want to work for that particular module.

I spoke to a design thinker and to a creative mind like theirs anything over academic or something that involves too much "follow the rules or fail" causes them to have a sort of procrastinating nature towards said modules.

For most people it takes just a tiny thorn in the side to ruin their mood towards campus work. Look like I'm going to need to steal various solution methods from my co-captains find a solution for this problem.

The Cafeteria Crew

Captains Log
Entry 2
May 26

Today i spent the day getting to know the inhabitants of the cafeteria, a hungry bunch constantly chit chatting, refuelling and meeting the other veganites. Its a place with great food, great ambiance and local sport such as pool and fuzball.

It's more than a meeting place but a hub of interaction between the different people who exchange ideas over a meal and a drink or pass the time with a sport challenge.

Sounds like a piece of paradise but alas there are a few issues that the locals wouldn't mind changing. For example some of the species just want to take a seat and eject the stress of the morning but space is limited and many are forced to stand, not nice if you are a hungry snap shotter who's been on their feet all day. Another issue i found was the design world does not give its inhabitants enough time to hunt, catch, skin and cook their food, by the time they get their meal ready its already time to get back to your daily activities while trying not to get mustard all over your white shirt.

Almost all inhabitants need at least an hour to get everything done and have a little time to relax, it will even help the system because for some crazy reason the time flows even during the morning and odd after lunch.... Crazy these veganites i say.

The Search Begins

Captain's log
May 25th

For the past couple months I find myself spending a lot of time at campus, sort of like my second home, and campus life is its own organism in a creative ecosystem. Like any ecosystem out there, there are bits and pieces that don't sit too well with its inhabitants and may cause a little stir in the mood. My quest requires me to infiltrate this environment and gather info on what could be improved.

As any self respected adventurer i have gathered and studied my new land and gotten to know how each species of what i like to call "Veganites" behave. You get your cafeteria crew, the IT wizards, the design thinkers, the word masters, the snap shotters and many other crazy species.

I will be recording my findings and help the Veganites tame the wacky environment that is campus.

As we learnt in Captains leaning unit one, its all about the research.
